What type of cables do I use for a home network?
I’m adding a 2nd PC at home and want to wire a network to share an internet connection and printer. What type of cables should I use between my modem and router(would it be the same as what’s between my modem and PC now?) Router and PC’s? Router and printer (I’m told I would need a print server here too)? I was looking at Cat 5e cables but don’t know the applications for the straight, crossover, and rolling variations. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Also is a router better to use than a switch in this situation?
thanks guys! So does anyone know what’s up with the different cat 5e cable types? I’ve seen the configurations of the straight, crossover and rolling, but I can’t find which should be used where.
The down side to printer sharing is the computer which the printer is connected to MUST be turned on in order for the printer to be shared. Adding a print server allows the printer to be accessible independent of a computer. Just a consideration.
