Is Cat 3 cable = Cat 5/6 Cable??
I’ve got 100 feet of un-crimped, 4-pair twisted Ethernet cable that claims to be Cat-3 as branded on the side but appears to be to be identical to Cat-5/6 cable. Regardless of the devices I’m using, what are the differences in the cable itself between categories 3 and 5/6? Is it possible to use this Cat 3 cable at Cat-5 speeds or even get away with calling it Cat-5 cable?
The difference in the categories of the cables is not what the cables are made out of. All use 22 or 24 AWG wire and plastic jackets and all have a 600 ohm reactance..
The difference is the number of twist per foot and the tighness of the twist. The more twist per foot the more wire is used to make the same lenght of cable.
The following is of importance for you
CAT3 = 10 MHz
CAT5 = 100 MHz
CAT5e = 350 MHz
CAT6 = 1000 MHz = 1 GHz
You can get away with CAT 3 on short distances, but in this day and age use CAT 5e or better.
Also if you are making 1 Ghz you need to use special ends rated for this speed.
